HVO100 is not biodiesel

HVO stands for Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil. Unlike conventional biodiesel (B100 or FAME), which is produced through esterification, HVO100 is made by treating oils and fats with hydrogen, yielding a paraffinic molecule very close in structure to fossil diesel.

This chemical difference matters: it explains why HVO100 behaves like a premium fuel rather than a fragile substitute. This is the most common point of confusion among fleet managers, and it deserves to be clarified before any purchasing decision.

Engine compatibility: a genuine drop-in fuel

HVO100 is designed as a drop-in fuel: it can replace fossil diesel with no mechanical modification, used alone or blended, in most recent diesel engines. This is a major advantage over B100, which often requires seal or filter adaptations.

  • Check the manufacturer's approval for each vehicle model.
  • Confirm compliance with the EN 15940 paraffinic diesel standard.
  • Make sure the manufacturer's warranty remains valid with this fuel.
  • Plan the supply logistics (dedicated storage or blending).

Most European truck manufacturers now approve HVO100. Still, this verification step remains non-negotiable before switching a fleet over.

  • Better oxidation stability, meaning the fuel keeps its quality longer in storage.
  • Cleaner combustion, with fewer engine deposits than with some biodiesel blends.
  • Reduced lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions, potentially up to 90 percent depending on the feedstock and the RED II / RED III calculation methodology.

These technical characteristics translate into simpler operations: fewer fuel-related incidents, better reliability in winter, and a carbon footprint that can be properly documented for reporting purposes.

Pricing: a premium fuel, a strategic investment

Let's be direct: HVO100 costs more than fossil diesel. This premium depends on availability, feedstock and your location, and it is unlikely to disappear in the short term.

The return on HVO100 is not measured only per litre, but in the ability to secure contracts, get ahead of ETS2, and meet the CSR requirements of key clients.

For many transport directors, the question is no longer "why pay more" but "how to stay eligible" for tenders that now include carbon criteria. HVO100 then becomes a commercial lever as much as a fuel choice.
