HVO vs MGO in Yachting: the Real ROI in 2026

Beyond pump price: the real cost of MGO

Traditional marine gas oil (MGO) often looks cheaper at the pump than HVO. But that raw comparison hides deferred costs: exposure to future carbon levies, regulatory penalty risk, and faster engine wear. For a shipowner or fleet manager, the right metric is not the cheapest liter but the total cost of ownership (TCO) over the vessel's operating life.

FuelEU Maritime already sets a declining trajectory for the carbon intensity of fuels used on board. Sticking with MGO alone simply postpones the effort to a point when flexibility will be narrower and compliance costs higher. Blending in HVO now, even partially, smooths that financial transition.

HVO, a drop-in solution without technical modifications

HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil) meets the EN 15940 standard, making it a synthetic paraffinic fuel directly compatible with existing marine diesel engines. No modification to engines, filters, or tanks is required: it can be used neat or blended with MGO without any technical adaptation.

This drop-in compatibility removes one of the main perceived barriers to the energy transition: capital expenditure across an entire fleet. Owners can change their fuel sourcing without touching propulsion systems or interrupting vessel operations.

Maintenance and longevity: the operational benefits of HVO

HVO has a higher cetane number than MGO and near-zero sulphur and aromatic content. This cleaner combustion reduces carbon deposit formation in modern injection systems, which are particularly sensitive to fouling.

For technical crews, this translates into filters that clog more slowly and potentially longer oil-change intervals, depending on the engine manufacturer's recommendations. Over time, these maintenance savings offset part of the initial price gap between HVO and MGO.

The real ROI of HVO is measured over the engine's lifecycle, not just the price tag at the pump.

ISCC traceability and brand image: an asset for charter

HVO can deliver GHG emission reductions of up to 90%, depending on the feedstock used and the calculation methodology applied under the RED II / RED III directives. But that performance only has value if it is verifiable: ISCC EU or ISCC PLUS certification guarantees feedstock traceability and removes any suspicion of greenwashing.

Charter clients and owners are increasingly demanding on this front: a declarative environmental approach is no longer enough. A verifiable ISCC certificate, backed by a documented carbon footprint, becomes a tangible selling point when marketing a yacht for charter.

How Heeding secures your HVO supply

Heeding connects shipowners and fleet managers with certified HVO producers and distributors, with full traceability documentation for every delivered batch. The platform centralizes ISCC certificates, emissions reports, and port-by-port supply tracking.

Before deciding, it is worth quantifying the financial equation precisely for your fleet. Use our TCO calculator to estimate the real ROI of switching your vessels to HVO in two minutes, and explore our full offering at myheeding.com.
